The Mountain Guide performs two fundamental roles: guiding and teaching.
Historically, mountain guides were often shepherds or local valley inhabitants with deep knowledge of the terrain, who accompanied nobles and explorers on their early ascents. Over time, this profession has evolved into a highly specialized role: today, an Mountain Guide not only leads people in the mountains but is also responsible for their technical training and safety.
Mountain Guides teach climbing techniques, movement on rock and ice, ski mountaineering, and mountaineering in general. They also pass on essential skills such as assessing avalanche-prone slopes, analyzing snowpack conditions, and performing self-rescue maneuvers.
In essence, they represent the highest level of expertise in the alpine environment at 360°: from freeride skiing to ski mountaineering, from rock climbing to ice climbing, all the way to the most demanding alpine ascents.
An aspiring Mountain Guide is a fully-fledged mountain professional, registered in a professional register. After passing a very rigorous selection, they complete a training course of about two years before obtaining their qualification.
Before becoming a UIAGM Mountain Guide, recognized internationally, the aspirant must spend a two-year internship period, during which they further refine their practical and theoretical skills.
During this period, aspirants may encounter some limitations, established on a regional basis, relating to the difficulty of ascents or the maximum altitude that can be reached. However, they can still work independently, organizing excursions and activities under their own responsibility. With rare exceptions, the activity is carried out mainly in Italy and not abroad.
At the end of the two years of internship, the aspirant finally can obtain the title of Mountain Guide, complete and internationally recognized.
