Normal Route to Ortles – Route Description
The Normal Route on Mount Ortles is a classic alpine climb on mixed terrain, elegant and varied, graded PD+. The route can be divided into two main sections, each with different technical characteristics but equally captivating.
- First section: from Sulden, an initial ascent by chairlift is followed by a hike along an alpine trail leading to the Tabaretta Hut. From here, the route continues along a path and easy rock sections to reach the Payer Hut, where the night is usually spent.
- Second section: departure from the hut on rocky terrain with a few easy climbing passages until reaching the glacier. Using crampons and ice axe, the glacier is climbed—sometimes steeply—until reaching the upper glacial plateau, from where the summit comes into view. The top is reached via a final easy rocky section. The descent follows the same route back to the hut and down to the valley.
