Ski touring in Cortina d'Ampezzo with a mountain guide

Cortina is surrounded by mountains on every side: the Tofane, Cristallo, Sorapiss, Croda da Lago. Move a little away from the slopes and you find yourself in quiet valleys where the only sound is your skins on the snow.

For ski touring it's a very varied area. There are easy tours through the woods and up to mountain huts, good for beginners, and there are couloirs and passes that need fitness and a confident descent. In between, plenty of medium tours with views that make the day on their own.

Where we go

We choose the route together a few days before, looking at the avalanche bulletin, the snow and your level. A few examples:

  • Croda da Lago and Forcella Ambrizzola: a steady climb through woods and clearings, looking out to Pelmo and Becco di Mezzodì.
  • Fanes and Travenanzes: wide plateaus and long valleys, for those who like covering distance in a wild setting.
  • Tofane and Cristallo: the more demanding tours, with steep slopes and couloirs for those already at home in fresh snow.

Do you need experience?

Less than you might think. Skinning uphill is quick to learn: what you mostly need is good fitness and the will to walk for a few hours at a steady pace.

The descent is the more technical part, because off-piste snow keeps changing: powder, crust, spring snow. If you're comfortable on red runs, we can already find something that suits you.

If you don't feel at ease in fresh snow yet, you can skin up and ski down a groomed run. In Cortina there are many ways to combine the two, and it's still a great day out.

Why go with a guide

In winter the mountains change from one day to the next, and knowing where to go is the hardest part. A guide knows the area, reads the snow and picks the right tour for that day and that group. You'll also learn how to use a transceiver, shovel and probe, and how to move more safely in the mountains.

All you have to do is climb and enjoy the ride down.
